Benson Cheung is a screen composer creating hybrid cinematic orchestration and ambient music for visual media. This single EP, Island, is a re-composition inspired by the Nintendo game Animal Crossing, created using footage from the game’s trailer and re-scored with new music.
The track explores the game’s relaxed and playful atmosphere, evoking the feeling of running around the island, interacting with animal NPCs, fishing, and freely exploring the environment. The trailer’s theme of friendship was a key inspiration for the composition, reflecting the social and welcoming nature of the game.
Musically, the piece uses jazz-influenced instrumentation and light percussion, including electric guitar, double bass, bongo, tambourine, and a brass section. Sparkle-like synth textures are added to enhance the cute and cheerful tone. The overall style draws from bossa nova, a genre closely associated with beach and island settings. Combined with subtle sea wave sounds, the music reinforces a calm and laid-back mood.
