Benson Cheung is a screen composer creating hybrid cinematic orchestration and ambient music for visual media. This single EP is a liminal music piece exploring dreamcore aesthetics, originally designed for a liminal-style game project.
The track explores a space between reality and dreams, disturbingly familiar, yet hauntingly empty of human presence. It evokes nostalgia with an underlying sense of unease, as if something feels comforting but slightly off.
The sound palette is built around detuned piano and airy drones, forming a fragile foundation. Distorted lead synths carry the melody, while vinyl crackle textures reinforce a sense of aged memory and emotional distance.
This project marks Benson’s first exploration into liminal music. The harmonic language plays a key role, using subtle shifts, such as moving between major and minor chords to create tension within otherwise peaceful moments. The process pushed him outside his comfort zone, particularly in sound design and instrument selection, opening new creative possibilities for future ambient and game-focused works.
